Reiki for Burnout: When You’re Running on Empty

Jun 2026 | Blog

Burnout isn’t the same as stress. I think that’s something important to say upfront.

Stress, at least, still has energy to it. You’re fighting, pushing, trying to manage. You’re overwhelmed but you’re still doing. Burnout is different. Burnout is when the fighting stops but you can’t stop. It’s like driving a car, fast, with broken brakes!  Your body is saying no, but your brain keeps saying yes because saying no isn’t an option or at least, it doesn’t feel like one. It’s exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix. It’s the kind of tired that goes deeper than your body – into your bones, your nervous system, your ability to feel anything at all… and enjoy life.

I see this often, I’ve been there too (many times, too many in fact), especially in my work with professionals in London. People who are brilliant at what they do, who’ve built successful careers, who’ve learned to manage everything – and then one day they realise they can’t manage this. Not because they’re not trying hard enough. But because you can’t outthink burnout. You can’t problem-solve your way through it. You can’t willpower your way back to okay. And that’s terrifying for people like us who’ve always been able to figure things out. It’s so disempowering and confusing that we often ask (or at least I did) ‘What’s wrong with me?’.

Peaceful moment of rest and calm

So how can Reiki support someone who’s burned out?

Reiki won’t magically erase the things causing your burnout. It won’t restructure your workload or change your circumstances. If you need to make changes – and often you do – those still need to happen. But what Reiki does is give your nervous system permission to stop. Not to rest while you’re trying to solve things. But to genuinely stop. To pause the constant state of alert, the fighting, the pushing. To let your body know it’s safe to not be in crisis mode.

When you’re burned out, your nervous system has been running on high for so long that it forgets there’s another way to be. It’s learned that survival means staying switched on, staying vigilant, staying ready. Reiki doesn’t fix that with thinking or understanding – it lets your body experience it directly. What it feels like to actually be still. What it feels like when nothing is being asked of you. What it feels like to simply exist without producing, without solving, without managing. Simply being.

In those quiet moments during a Reiki session, something shifts. It’s subtle sometimes, profound other times. The constant hum of anxiety quiets. Your shoulders drop. Your breath deepens. Your body gets a chance to remember what it feels like to be safe.

And here’s the thing – when your nervous system finally has permission to stop, something interesting happens. Clarity sometimes arrives. Not the forced kind you get from thinking harder. The kind that comes from finally being still enough to hear what you actually need. Sometimes it’s rest. Sometimes it’s permission to change something. Sometimes it’s just knowing you’re not broken – you’re burned out. And there’s a difference.

I’ve worked with clients who’ve come to me completely depleted, running on fumes, convinced they just needed to push harder. And I’ve watched them, over a few sessions, start to remember who they are beyond their productivity. They start to remember they’re human, not just a person doing things.

That doesn’t mean everything changes overnight. Burnout doesn’t work that way. But what shifts is your relationship to it. You’re not fighting anymore. You’re not drowning. You’re taking back some agency – not by doing more, but by allowing yourself to be less for a while.

If you’re burned out, you don’t need another thing to figure out. You don’t need more strategies or more productivity hacks. You need your body and nervous system to feel that it’s okay to rest. And you need to remember what that feels like.

That’s what Reiki holds space for. That’s what I hold space for.
