What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, complementary therapy that helps your body activate its natural relaxation response. Originally developed in Japan over a century ago, it is now widely used in healthcare settings across the UK, including hospitals and wellness centres, as a safe and effective way to support overall wellbeing.
So what exactly is it? The word “Reiki” means “universal life energy” in Japanese. When we’re stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, our natural energy flow can become blocked, leaving us feeling drained or “off.” Think of Reiki as a way to help your body remember how to truly relax — like a meditation for the body, gently settling your nervous system. Many clients describe it as blissful, and leave feeling more like themselves again.
As a trained Reiki practitioner, I help restore that natural flow of energy in your body. This isn’t about mystical powers – for me it’s about creating the right conditions for your body’s own healing mechanisms to kick in, encouraging your nervous system to shift from stress mode into a more relaxed state.
And what does science say about Reiki? As someone who works with data professionally, I’m naturally drawn to understanding the evidence. Research studies suggest Reiki can support a reduction in cortisol (our main stress hormone) levels and activate your body’s “rest and digest” mode, supporting deeper relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep, and helping with pain management.
What I like about Reiki is that it’s widely considered safe for most people, which is why it’s so popular in cancer and palliative care, and it beautifully complements any medical treatment or therapy you might already be having.

What Are the Benefits of Reiki?
The beauty of Reiki is that its benefits often extend far beyond just feeling relaxed during the session itself. Many clients notice they’re sleeping better, thinking more clearly, and handling life with a bit more ease in the days that follow.
And here’s what I’ve discovered: Reiki works best when it’s tailored to what’s actually going on in your life right now. So rather than giving you a generic list of benefits, I’ve broken it down by the real situations my clients face every day.

Reiki for Work
Workplace stress doesn’t stay at the office. It disrupts your sleep, clouds your thinking, makes you tired long after logging off. Reiki puts a pause on your nervous system and racing mind, so you can process and release that built-up tension, and actually calm down.
Practically, this could look like:
Handling the Pressure:
- Coming up with practical steps to tackle a deadline, instead of panicking and running around like a headless chicken
- Feeling grounded before presentations, difficult conversations, appraisals and bouncing back quicker afterwards
- Setting boundaries (kindly and firmly!) with colleagues (and bosses!) without feeling guilty or anxious
Having that Headspace:
- Actually thinking, rather than constant on-guard scanning for what could go wrong in the next presentation, meeting or project
- More creative thinking, fewer ruminations – fresh angles on a pitch or problem you’re normally too fried to see
- Better decision-making on what to tackle or delegate on your to-do list – simply working smart, not hard
Feeling Like Yourself Again:
- Being you at work, rather than playing a role – and feeling good about it
- Not needing to have the answer to everything, all the time
- Not letting that critical voice in your head (often known as “hello, imposter syndrome!”) make you shrink in the boardroom
- Being confident in your own judgement again – speaking up rather than staying quiet and hoping to be noticed
Physically Loosening Up:
- Dropping those tight, tensed shoulders and neck – and feeling lighter
- Breathing that isn’t shallow and tight – and maybe comes from the belly (not the chest!)
- That knot in your stomach easing, instead of sitting there all day
Individual experiences vary, and Reiki works as a complementary therapy alongside any existing healthcare.
Reiki for LIFe
Juggling not just work but also family in the relentless pace of current life? You’re not alone in feeling completely exhausted, especially if you’re often the one holding everything together. Reiki gives you a moment to pause, breathe, and think about how to put yourself first for a change.
In everyday moments, this could look like:
Catching Your Breath:
- Having that mini second to decide to respond rather than snap, when everyone needs something from you at once
- Being more in the present at school drop-off, family dinners, or an evening with your partner, rather than your mind already racing ahead
- Getting through the Christmas table without needing a Reiki session immediately after
- Having a bit more left in the tank by the evening, instead of running on fumes
Being More Like Yourself Again:
- Being more you, not just the person holding it all together for everyone else
- Knowing that you’ll be OK, whatever curveballs life throws at you, instead of panicking and feeling anxious
- Feeling the emotions after a rough week, but also bouncing back faster after it
Giving Yourself Permission:
- Pausing or resting, without that inner voice telling you to be productive and stay on top of everything
- Saying “no” without guilt or feeling like you’re disappointing others and need to apologise for it
- Enjoying a quieter mind rather than rushing to the next thing on the to-do list
Feeling Physically Lighter:
- Fully breathing all the way down, instead of staying shallow and tight in your chest
- Releasing tightness in your shoulders or neck — some clients reckon they look a touch younger too
- Dropping tension in muscles, whether that’s from pregnancy, a long week, or just life catching up with your body
Individual experiences vary, and Reiki works alongside any existing support or care you’re receiving, not instead of it.
Reiki for school
Exams, friendships, choosing your path forward – being a student can feel like pressure from every angle. All that stress? Completely normal. But it doesn’t have to define your experience.
Here’s what often shifts for young people:
Dealing With Exam Pressure:
- Thinking more clearly under pressure during tests and exams, instead of your mind going completely blank
- Actually concentrating when you’re studying, instead of “just checking my phone for five minutes” (we all know how that goes)
- Handling coursework with less pressure, instead of feeling like it’s all piling up on you
Being Yourself:
- Feeling more like you, instead of worrying about fitting in or needing everyone’s approval to feel like you’re enough
- Dealing with friendship drama or FOMO without it completely derailing you (yes, even the group chat kind)
- Speaking up and sharing your thoughts in discussions without overthinking every word for the next three hours
Resting Better:
- Sleeping better, instead of doom-scrolling until 2am and wondering why you’re tired
- Feeling less tension in your muscles, fewer stress headaches or stomach aches
- Being more present, knowing when to pause and when to keep going — and yes, having more fun along the way!
Figuring It Out:
- Feeling a bit more excited (and a bit nervous too!) about what’s next, rather than just the nerves
- Feeling less overwhelmed by having to make life choices that feel way too big for a Tuesday afternoon
- Being at ease with figuring out who you are, a bit more each time
Your results will be personal to you, and Reiki works well alongside any other support you’re using. Please note: I hold an enhanced DBS check, however clients under 16 years old must still be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for all sessions.
What Should I Expect During a Reiki Session?
If you’ve never had Reiki before, it’s natural to wonder what actually happens. Let me walk you through what to expect so you feel comfortable and prepared.
When you arrive, we’ll have a brief chat about what’s brought you here. This isn’t a formal medical consultation – just a relaxed conversation so I can understand what’s going on in your life right now and tailor the session to what you need most. You’ll stay fully clothed throughout (just remove shoes and jackets) and can ask questions or request adjustments at any point.
You’ll lie down comfortably while I place my hands gently either on or just above different areas of your body – whatever you prefer. It’s a very gentle, non-invasive treatment with no massage or manipulation involved.
Most people relax deeply quite quickly. Some drift off to sleep, others stay peacefully awake. You might notice warmth, gentle tingling, your breathing slowing, your mind becoming quieter, or sometimes emotional releases like tears or sighs. All responses are completely normal and show your body releasing tension.
Your comfort is my priority. Everything is confidential, and you’re always in control. There’s no right or wrong way to experience Reiki – whatever happens is exactly what you need.
For clients under 16: A parent or guardian must stay for the session, and written consent is required.

“The warmth I felt in my head and neck was so soothing, and there was this lovely feeling that spread through my back. By the end, I felt lighter, relaxed, and my mind was finally at peace.”
